FURY has been an adventure. In the beginning, I thought it would be a one night experiment to show a small audience that ballet and indie music belong on stage together. Now it’s grown into an ongoing live show we’ve shared with lots of audiences. But from those very early days when we ventured forth to produce this multi-faceted thing, we also aspired to eventually connect our work to issues we care about. Over this quiet but busy-behind-the-scenes winter, we’ve started to make tracks on that road too. Of course, the scorched earth world of Fury Road brings environmental sustainability front and center, and to that end, we’ve partnered with BYO Bottle, which is working to eliminate single use plastic from music performances, and we've pledged to work with venues where we perform to make sure there are water filling stations available. We followed that lead with our new merchandise choice too and are excited to offer FURY desert canteens for sale at our shows (and online soon).
Next, our very own composer, Kristina Dutton has been working at the intersection of science and art as it relates to the environment for over five years, doing field recordings, composing film scores, curating conversation series among scientists and musicians, and many other projects aimed at bringing the feels to the facts and figures science provides. For FURY, she is now working on an opening act for our show with musical colleague Nate Kinsella of the band American Football. The piece showcases the fragile biodiversity of butterflies, building upon the work of scientists Dr Arnaud Martin and Dr Nipam Patel, echoing the ecological themes of Fury. She is also working on an immersive soundscape experience to be paired with the FURY shows, created from field recordings in the tropical forests of Panama and Peru. We have other ideas cooking too, and will share as we circle in. Stay tuned - we’ll be sharing a lot more soon!
