About

From Kate Duhamel, Executive Producer & Creative Director

As a ballet lover who believes there are large potential audiences for dance who never see it, I produced FURY as an experiment in cross-pollinating ballet with contemporary music and a modern story in order to appeal new, younger and more diverse audiences. Bands are also looking for ways to be innovative with their live acts, and artists of all stripes are intrigued by unconventional ways of collaborating. Now, over a year and multiple runs into FURY, we’ve seen that the audiences we hoped for are coming and we are thrilled.

FURY is a multimedia concert experience inspired by the iconic movie, Mad Max: Fury Road.  Featuring a mood driven original score by Indie-pop band YASSOU and composer and violinist, Kristina Dutton, FURY brings a cast of world class ballet dancers and musicians together on stage to portray characters fighting for survival in a journey that moves between driving intensity and tender intimacy. Audience surrounds the stage in an ever changing, post-apocalyptic world created with immersive visuals and lighting by designers Michael Straun and Brandon McFarland. The ascendant choreographer, Danielle Rowe created movement for another original collaboration among principal dancers from SFBallet and LINES Ballet.

FURY hit with a splash in August, 2018, selling out its first two night run at The Midway, a large music club in San Francisco. Over the past year, it went on to perform more sold out runs in other music clubs and a museum in the Bay Area. The FURY team also performed a pop-up at Oakland First Fridays outdoor art festival, commissioned a large mural which showed at Silicon Vally Comic Con, and is premiering a music video in January, 2020. The album of the full 60 minute score is also being recorded for release in 2020.

FURY spins a one-hour survivalist romance that leaves classical fairy tales in the dust.

BOOKER TESTIMONIAL

From Cate Van Dyke, San Francisco California Academy of Sciences NightLife Program Strategy Specialist. The NightLife series attracts approximately 90,000 guests a year, primarily in the 25-35 age group.

“As the person responsible for curating our NightLife entertainment, I can say that FURY stood out as one of the most ambitious and exciting performances we have had at the Academy. The show is inspired by “Mad Max: Fury Road” which was a strong draw and perfect for our audience. The 10-piece live band, including a string quartet, was impressive and played a dynamic and beautiful score that ranged from rock to classical and back again. The ballet dancing on a stage in the round was world-class, and makes FURY feel new, creative and even jaw dropping. The large video screen behind the band created the setting and mood, and all of those elements combined to make a show that was extremely unique and engaging for our audience. Most guests were completely hypnotized by the show, start to finish, and some of the comments I heard were: "I've never been to a ballet before but if this is what it's like, I'm in!"

All of us at the Academy were thrilled to have FURY be part of NightLife. It is the kind of entertainment that makes our series noteworthy and cutting edge. I can highly recommend it for any institution seeking unique and high quality programming for a similar audience.”

One of the latest and maybe most audacious attempts yet to reach millennials where they live.
